Our recent development of organic biopolymer composite electrodes opens avenues towards the use of renewable materials in the construction of wooden batteries or supercapacitors for charge storage. Combining these new elements may give different conditions for introduction of energy technology in areas now lacking electrical grids, but having sufficient solar energy inputs.

Biocarbon Meets Carbon

Humic acid (HA) is a biopolymer formed from degraded plants, making it a ubiquitous, renewable, sustainable, and low cost source of biocarbon materials. HA contains abundant functional groups, such as carboxyl-, phenolic/alcoholic hydroxyl-, ketone-, and quinone/hydroquinone (Q/QH(2))-groups.

The porous carbon electrodes can be easily produced from local plant-based agricultural waste materials. Such performance and feedstock advantage have prompted their study for CDI. Yet no relationship has emerged for the carbon between its CDI performance and its biomass precursor properties and formation conditions.

Metal

The high concentration of hydrazine-derived free NH2 groups (6.01 mmol g21 or 7.08 mmol cm23) enabled reversible carbamic acid formation with CO2 and a high Qst(CO2) value of B90 kJ mol21. This amine-tethered MOF was studied by temperature-vacuum swing adsorption and was found to exhibit a lower regeneration temperature than that of other alkylamine-functionalized MOFs.
